HOW TO SLOWLY CHANGE YOUR LIFE
How To Slowly But Surely Change Your Life!
It’s Never Too Late To Change Your Life!
Through this era of Re-inventing myself, I’ve done a lot of reflecting. In doing so I’ve come to realize I’ve “temporarily” reinvented myself in the past multiple times and in all those times I’ve unintentionally reverted back to my baseline. On all those occasions I reverted back to what seems to be my default settings, but the truth is default settings on any device are set by a company. This “baseline” way of living isn’t truly my default, it’s the default that I’m programmed with. My true baseline settings are none, they are a blank canvas I get to build on.
Knowing this very important truth that most of us tend to revert back to a default setting not of our choosing, what can we do to prevent this?
I’m putting in the work to reinvent myself and I want to make sure this work doesn’t create a temporary experience. There seems to be 2 ways I can address this, finding a solution to not reverting back, or adjusting my default settings.
Reverting back to baseline is a human experience that happens at all levels including the body. Our body wants to experience homeostasis in body temperature, body weight, fluid retention, etc. When body temperature rises, we sweat as a way to cool down and bring the body temperature back to baseline.
It would take a lot of effort to prevent this evolutionary drive back to baseline. Instead I decided to tackle the “default settings”.
How do I adjust my default settings and have this new version of myself be my new baseline?
The answer is a combination of mindset work and building new systems that make it easy to have sustainable new habits.
Mindset work will address what we believe about ourselves, the world, how we show up and will impact not only the energy we hold but also the actions we take day to day.
The systems will make keeping the new ways of showing up in the world a habit, it will allow for this new way of being to become our default.
In my own personal journey of reinventing myself there are a few beliefs I want to establish as my default.
I am healthy, physically active and athletic
I am a content creator, a story teller
I have a job I love, am good at and creates a positive impact in the world
I run a successful business
I have passive income
I have the resources and capacity to help my family when needed
I will start with one belief at a time and establish that as my default setting.
Let's grab the first belief:
I am healthy, physically active and athletic.
In order for this to be true what actions do I take, what experiences do I have, what does my day to day look like?
Just to be clear this is my personal desire and definition of health, physical activity and being athletic. You may not agree with this and that’s ok, it’s a belief that is tailored to me, my vision, my desires, my values.
Back to creating a new default setting with the belief of “I am healthy, physically active and athletic”.
I will journal what this means for me, what it looks like and how this may be true for me already. I will then do a bit of energy work to embed it into my energetic field (let me know if you are interested in me sharing more about energy work) and finally I will create tangible actions that represent this new truth.
I am healthy for me includes taking my vitamins and ensuring I am keeping up with whatever doctor appts I have. I will create a system to ensure I take daily vitamins and not forget about doctor appts.
I am physically active and athletic. For me walking more is something I want to incorporate into my life so I will track my steps and have a goal to hit on average. Running or building muscle feels like an athletic endeavor and currently I'm in a building muscle phase. I create a routine where I will lift weights with progressive overload a few times per week.
I like to start small. When I look at the current amount of steps I take daily it was about 3K, I decided to increase it to 4K for an entire week and then see if I adjust it. Currently I am hitting 7K daily on average and it still feels like an effort and not a normal part of my day so I will keep it here until it is my default. My ultimate goal is about 8-9K steps daily. For lifting I was lifting zero days per week so I will establish the habit of lifting 2x per week.
As I show up daily as this new version of myself, I am establishing a new default, a new state of homeostasis. Small actions lead to big results. Staying consistent overtime will have a remarkable effect on our lives.
